The cure period is the time after application during which the coating chemically cross-links and hardens. The initial set takes 24 to 48 hours. But full hardness usually develops over 2 to 3 weeks, based on experience and according to an article published by FEYNLAB

During this window, the vehicle needs to be protected from anything that interrupts the bonding process.

  1. Avoid washing the vehicle for at least 7 days after application. During this window, the coating is still cross-linking with the clear coat.
  2. Keep the vehicle out of the rain for the first 24 to 48 hours. After that, incidental rain is acceptable.
  3. Do not use any soap, detergent, or cleaning product on the coated surface for the full 7 days.
  4. Avoid bird droppings, tree sap, and other organic contaminants sitting on the surface during this period. If they land, remove them gently with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.
  5. Do not drive through an automatic car wash.

 

Following these steps allows the ceramic coating to bond correctly. Skip this post-care protocol, and even the highest-quality coating product and application process will underperform.

How to Tell When Your Ceramic Coating Is Wearing Off

Ceramic coating does not fail all at once. It wears down gradually, usually starting with subtle changes that most drivers hardly notice.

The best way to tell whether your ceramic coating is working correctly is with the water bead test

Here is how to do it:

  1. Rinse a clean section of the hood or roof of your vehicle with water.
  2. Observe how the water behaves. A healthy coating will cause water to form tight, spherical beads that roll off the surface immediately.
  3. If water spreads flat and clings to the surface instead of beading, the hydrophobic properties have degraded. This is the first reliable sign the coating needs attention.
  4. Run a clean, dry hand across a washed panel. The surface should feel slick and glass-like. If it feels rough or gritty, contaminants have bonded to the thinning coating.
  5. If both the bead test and the touch test show degradation, book a professional assessment. Depending on how far the wear has progressed, a booster spray or a full recoat may be needed.

5 Ways to Make Your Ceramic Coating Last as Long as Possible

1: Always hand-wash your vehicle with a pH-neutral shampoo:

Do this every 2 weeks, or after each snowfall or coastal drive. pH-neutral shampoos preserve the ceramic bond that alkaline or acidic products slowly break down from the outside in.

2: Dry with a clean, soft microfiber towel: 

Do this after every wash. Never air-dry. Water left to evaporate leaves mineral deposits that etch the surface over time.

3: Avoid brush car washes entirely: 

Touchless car washing is the only acceptable automated option, but even then, many commercial car washes use high-pH chemicals that can degrade the coating. Avoid.

4: Apply a ceramic booster spray: 

Do this every 3 to 6 months to refresh the hydrophobic layer between professional assessments.

5: Remove bird droppings and tree sap:
